It’s been a while since my last blog post and a lot has gone on recently so I’ll give you a brief summary :
First off, it’s been nice to be getting some very warm weather recently, however, warmth and wind don’t generally go hand in hand in England which is a shame! With all this warm weather I had an unexpected full power session on Monday which was awesome! Wind was only meant to be breaching the 20 knot barrier slightly yet we got 25-30 knots which was really good, and with the clocks forward it meant I could spend longer on the water which meant I got to sail as the tide was dropping and it was getting flatter and flatter on the inside! I was really stoked with my session as I am now getting really consistent with my spocks in all wind strengths and sea states which is good, My flaka attempts have come back to normal instead of the half flaka/half ponch ones that came out of nowhere and never worked! And I finally landed my first flaka in 4 months which was a good feeling again! Attempts are also getting consistent and better (basically sliding all the time now). My switch has also come on big time, I’m consistent with ducking the sail and staying fully planing and now getting the pop on my funnels sorted!
So after a cheeky after session pint I headed home and got straight in the van and went to collect my new board!!!! 2011 RRD Twinzer 88 litre. What a beautiful board! Looks sick and from what I can gather it sails well too. Basically had a really short session on Tuesday on it, wind had dropped to pumping onto the plane with a 5.3 so wasn’t powered up enough to do anything, however I had just got the board and HAD to get out on it!
Next big news is that I have sorted out my deal with my sail sponsors now and have officially signed to XO sails which will now be distributed by Ian Kraft at Surfkraft. At the moment there is still 2010 stock left over in the Surfsales website so if you want to grab a bargain head to their website and pick up some sweet deals on 2010 XO sails and 2010 Exocet boards! They are also still doing all the accessories like masts, mast extensions etc.
Finally, I have applied for a Wild Card to the PWA Podersdorf event in Austria from the 29th of April to the 4th of May. Really hoping I get this Wild Card as it would bring my sailing on a huge amount, especially competing at such a high standard against the guys on the pro tour!! If my application doesn’t get accepted then it will be a big shame but we still have more Brits than normal competing at the even this year with the likes of; Adam Sims, Max Rowe, Andy Chambers, and Jamie Drummond. And I’m sure they will be posting some good results!
Anyway that’s it from me for now… on school holidays now so I’ve got to do some revision, some work, and get out on the water when I can! Looking windy towards the later part of the week! Hopefully get some decent conditions to properly try out the new board!
Due to the massive lack of wind recently I’ve booked myself 5 weeks in Fuerteventura over the summer! I’m going down the South of the Island where they hold the PWA at Sotovento which will be crazy! Hopefully will be getting 5 weeks of solid sailing in, in just board shorts which will be amazing…. It’s also a good time to go away as there are only a couple of weeks between the end of the summer and the Freestyle finals at Poole! So hopefully I’ll have some new moves in the bag for then! At the moment there is looking like there might be some wind around next week but I don’t want to jinx it this early on!
So I’ve had a busy couple of weeks recently, firstly I had an awesome photo shoot with Luke Yates at Way Ahead Photography and for this I got a load of Dakine goodies from Surf-sales where there is currently a clearance sale going on, so if you fancy getting anything from Dakine/Exocet/XO sails then get onto the website and have a look at the clearance section! Okay, so after my photo shoot I had to get on with some school work which is a massive bore but oh well! And luckily got a session in on the water which was cool! And finally I have got some coverage up on Boardseeker today (check out Wednesday 16th headlines)!
Now some exciting news! Looks like I’m booking 4/5 weeks in Fuerteventura this summer which will be awesome! I will be staying down in Sotovento with a few other guys from the UK which will be really good and the PWA will be on whilst I’m there so I will be watching that for a couple of days!
So I haven’t been out on the water much recently as it’s been Northerlies most of the time and freezing! However there has been a fair amount of sun around recently which is promising Hopefully it’ll start getting sunnier and warmer! I got out for a session on Thursday afternoon at my home spot, Hythe. It was super windy! I was stacked on my 4.2 which was nice Got a few forwards and a nice stalled forward, the tide was pretty high so the water state wasn’t very good for freestyle Looks like the wind is staying northerly for a while now Hopefully we get some good South Westerlies towards the end of March/beginning of April!

Here are a few links to videos from my session on Saturday down at the local lake. Would have them up on the site but having some problems with the embed code so just a link to the videos for now!
And finally…. the wind is looking promising for Friday Wooohoooo! Yet another session coming along! Keep checking the forecast!
So, down in Kent this weekend the wind has been absolutely firing! I managed to get out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! And all of the days I was on 3.7!!!!! WINDY!!
On Friday I had a bit of a rubbish sail really… rigged up and got on the water as fast as I could as the light was fading and I had a video camera with me and wanted to get some footage… so after a couple of runs getting used to the conditions I sailed in full power and went for a spock in the trough of a wave pretty close to the beach…. sadly I stacked this spock and ended up swimming! But then another wave came along, picked up my kit and launched it onto the beach resulting in a snapped mast, ripped sail, and end of session
Saturday proved a lot better for me… I got on the phone to my sponsors Surfsales and got a new mast bought down to me Friday evening so I was ready for Saturday!! Saturday morning came and the wind was howling!!! Packed the kit into my mum’s car and drove down to a local lake where I met a couple of friends for a full day of freestyle and filming! Even though we were on a lake the wind was still cranking me and another mate were sailing on 3.7 and the other two on 4.7 so good times all round! With the wind pumping and the water mirror flat we headed out and had an awesome day on the water! I was landing my spocks, spock 540’s very consistently and got frustratingly close to landing a few super slidey grubbys! With the wind cranking all day and the confidence building I decided to go for a couple of double spock attempts… and was surprised to see that they went quite well actually! Managed to get popping on the second spock on a couple of occasions! Hopefully we got a few on film as one of my friends came down to film so “watch this space” for a short video of the day
Sunday was the killer of all days! Woke up and could hardly move after 5/6 hours sailing on Saturday so I decided to stay in bed for a bit longer…. the wind that we were meant to be getting didn’t seem to be blowing that hard so I wasn’t that bothered! Around lunch time the wind started to pick up again so I headed down to the beach with Stuart and checked it out! Wind was cranking! 3.7 weather AGAIN! tide was dropping and the fishermen were leaving as their match had finished! Bonus. So I ran back home (bearing in mind I could hardly walk in the morning after Saturday) and grabbed my wetsuits. When I got back to the beach I was pleasantly surprised to see that the wind hadn’t dropped so I rigged 3.7 and got out on the water fast! With the tide dropping and the wind staying up some nice ramps were starting to form and I was landing my forwards really well! (mostly dry ones!) So I decided to go for a few stalled forwards and pulled off some really nice ones! Little bit wetter than the normal forwards but oh well!
Anyway I hope you all managed to get out at your local spots or someone else as I think the wind was hitting every part of the country! Keep watching the forecast in hope for some wind next weekend! Laters.
Looking like the wind is firing again this weekend! Friday, Saturday, Sunday, AND Monday all look like they’re going to be pretty big days especially Saturday! Will let you know where I will be sailing via my facebook page as it can be updated by my mobile, so keep checking that and the forecast!
So I wrapped up this awesome week up with yet another session today! Wind has swung more Southerly than it has been all week so me and a few mates headed round to Dymchurch and had a great session as the tide dropped. We had some really nice ramps for jumping/looping and super flat water close in to the beach for freestyle in front of the cameraman (my dad) Will get some photos from the session uploaded asap!
Sadly all good things must come to an end at some point and looking at the forecast that is about to happen! The wind is swinging round to the North for next week, and the temperature is dropping! Although looks like there is some wind around for next weekend Northerly and cold though!
What a week for wind! Had a week of awesome conditions in the South East! Looks like we still have one more day left before the wind goes back round to the North, drops off, and gets much colder again!
I’ve managed to take advantage of the warmer warmer weather this week and been on the water 3 times so far and hopefully I’ll get out again tomorrow!! The wind has been South Westerly and strong all week so I’ve sailed a lot at Camber, and had a good session at my home spot, Hythe today. Looks like we’ll be heading round to either Dymchurch or Pirate Springs tomorrow as the wind is pretty Southerly!
That’s it really! Hope you’ve made the most out of the wind and warmth this week, and if not get on the water tomorrow before it gets freeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing again!
Just got back from a session at a newly discovered spot. Well actually it’s been there for ages just never bothered giving it a go. The spot had a lot of potential however it is a quarry that has been filled in and is still being dug from so we got chucked off the water after about 45 minutes! Such a shame as the spot has perfectly flat water and clean wind… the only good things you need for a good freestyle spot!
Seems to be getting a little bit warmer too
